Last year saw the successful launch of FREDDIE FOR A DAY, the crazy idea inspired by our web editor Liz Swanton, who dressed up as Freddie Mercury (moustache included) for an entire working day in her bank in the City of London in order to raise money for the MPT. Starting at 7.00am in the morning on a crowded London tube train and finishing in triumph on stage at the Dominion Theatre with Brian, Roger and the cast of We Will Rock You, Liz raised over £1,400. The initiative has proved really popular and lots of fun, so the idea is, each year on September 5 coinciding with Freddie's birthday, people from all walks of life anywhere in the world do the same and dress up as Freddie Mercury in any costume they wish to wear. Or not just on September 5, as you can be Freddie For A Day any day you like!
From basic moustaches and T-shirt to any of his renowned stage costumes – we have yet to see someone in his exotic prawn outfit! Go to the What To Wear section of the website for ideas. You can raise money for the MPT by asking your family and friends, work colleagues, fellow students etc. to give money to the Mercury Phoenix Trust through Paypal or JustGiving.com, or set up your own JustGiving page. It doesn't have to be much, every bit adds up and it means the Mercury Phoenix Trust can carry on the fight against HIV/AIDS worldwide keeping Freddie's name and legacy alive.
We’ve got loads lined up for this year’s Freddie For A Day so keep checking the website and you can also follow us onFacebook. We’ll be running the ‘Best Costume’ and ‘Freddie in Most Original Location’ competition again with some fab prizes, and nearer to 5th September you will be able to upload your photos direct to the website. Fingers crossed we’ll also be selling our very own FFAD moustaches via the Queen online shop, with all profits going to the MPT.
