Dave Clark film.
Wed, Jan 21st, 2015

GLAD ALL OVER: THE DAVE CLARK FIVE AND BEYOND is showing on BBC2 at 10pm on Saturday 14th February.  The film features rare footage of Freddie talking about the musical, TIME. Press release below.

THE BRITISH INVASION of America in February and March 1964 was a two-pronged affair, and 50 years after the boys from Tottenham first stormed ashore alongside The Beatles, the USA loved The DC5 all over again. Broadcast nationwide in prime time in April 2014 by PBS in its Great Performances strand after the accolade of a special BAFTA New York premiere, Glad All Over: The Dave Clark Five and Beyond achieved amazing ratings and media coverage that reflect not only the love America has for the band but the craving for a story never told before: the hits, the style, the fame, and the compelling tale of what happened beyond the mania.

Testifying to the lasting impact of the band and what made them unique in an era of brilliant, game-changing creativity, Glad All Over: The Dave Clark Five and Beyond features newly filmed interviews with Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Sir Ian McKellen, Stevie Wonder, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt of The E Street Band, Gene Simmons of Kiss, Whoopi Goldberg, Dionne Warwick and Twiggy. Interwoven throughout, boyhood fan Tom Hanks’ inspirational and moving speech at The DC5’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2008 explains what five guys from North London and the Tottenham Sound meant to his generation.

As well as barnstorming performances by The DC5, the two-hour special also features rare TV footage from the legendary Ready Steady Go! series, where The DC5’s fellow pop pioneers The Beatles,The Rolling Stones, The Who, Dusty Springfield, Stevie Wonder,The Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding highlight a time of unparalleled excitement and innovation.

AND BEYOND THE ‘60s? Unseen archive interviews and performances with Sir Laurence Olivier and Freddie Mercury feature among the rare footage telling the story of Time, the spectacular, innovative and visionary rock musical with which Dave Clark reinvented London’s live music theatrein the ‘80s, playing to over a million people and spinning off 12 million record sales.
