Today on the NPR newsmagazine Morning Edition, rock legend Freddie Mercury is being profiled as part of the NPR series "50 Great Voices," which explores the talent and influence of artists who have left lasting impressions on music. The Queen front man -- who is remembered as much for his wide-ranging voice as his magnetic stage presence -- still resonates as an icon in popular music. The full story can be heard here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129476462

The story celebrates his legacy and demonstrates that his influence continues to be extended to a new generation of musicians. NPR talked to one of those artists -- American Idol finalist Adam Lambert -- who takes great inspiration from Mercury. Lambert rose to world-wide recognition in part because of his renditions of Mercury staples such as Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are the Champions.

"[Mercury] was completely over the top in the best possible way," Lambert says in the story. There are plenty of colorful female performers, but "Where's the classic pop/rock showman," Lambert asks.
