‘Queen will, Queen will … rock Ballarat!’

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of one of the greatest rock bands in history

The Art Gallery of Ballarat: 20 February – 11 April 2010

ROCK music fans from around the country are set to descend on Ballarat Australia for the world premiere exhibition of photographs and memorabilia of legendary English rock band Queen.

QUEEN – the Unseen Archive will feature unseen images of the group taken by friend and roadie Peter Hince, providing personal insight into one of the world’s greatest rock bands.

Hince was head of Queen’s road crew for two decades, with full access to all areas of Queen’s life both on stage and off.

As well as the incredible photo collection, the exhibition features rare items of personal and tour memorabilia, including Freddie Mercury’s pink ladies turtleneck made famous in the 1984 ‘I want to break free’ video clip, the legendary Shure 565 SD microphone used at all but one Queen tour, and the unforgettable tiger skin pants worn by drummer Roger Taylor. Plus hand-written lyrics and original posters, passes and tickets.

The Art Gallery of Ballarat will be the only place in Australia to exhibit this amazing collection with a percentage of all ticket sales going to support the Victorian AIDS Council.

Personal friend of the band and music guru, Molly Meldrum is thrilled to be associated with the exhibition.

“This world premiere event combines two loves of mine; music and country Victoria. Having known the band personally, I am especially interested in seeing images both on stage and behind the scenes. I believe this exhibition is huge coup for Ballarat and Australia as a whole.”

Co-curator Ron Egeberg said the Queen exhibition continues the gallery’s commitment to bringing exclusive world-class collections to Australian audiences.

“The Art Gallery of Ballarat is a leader in creating fresh, evolving and innovative ideas,” Mr Egeberg said.

“This remarkable exhibition is a fascinating retrospective of singer Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor whose innovative blend of music remains timeless.”

QUEEN – the Unseen Archive will be staged at the Art Gallery of Ballarat – its only Australian venue – in association with Proud Galleries, London, as its special Autumn 2010 exhibition, from 20 February to 11 April.
