The red carpet was rolled out at The Playhouse for the opening night of We Will Rock You. Queen legends Brian May and Roger Taylor delighted fans with their appearance in the finale of the musical last night. They shared the stage with stars Darren Day and Coronation Street actor Kevin Kennedy. Television stars Carol Smillie and Anthea Turner were among the audience, along with Lothians singing star Keith Jack. Crowds began gathering outside the Greenside Place venue more than an hour before the show. Audience members were clapping along to the well-known songs from the start.
May and Taylor received a standing ovation when they joined cast members on stage to perform Bohemian Rhapsody at the end of the show. The show also featured X Factor finalist Brenda Edwards and I’d Do Anything contestant Ashley Russell – a former Queen Margaret University student.
Afterwards actors mingled with guests at an aftershow party in the Forth Floor bar and restaurant at Harvey Nichols.
Brian May said he was delighted to be back in Edinburgh, although it was just for one night. He said “I love being in Edinburgh. My Mother was Scottish, so it’s like coming home for me. I thought the audience were amazing. They were very responsive. It went really well.”
Anthea Turner said she had come along to support her friend Darren Day who plays the part of villain Kashoggi. She said “I thought it was fantastic, I’ve known Darren for more than 20 years so I wanted to come along and support him. I’ve seen it before, but I thought it was tighter this time and more polished. It was nice to see him do something a bit different.”
Kevin Kennedy, who is better known as Curly Watts in Coronation Street was also having a good night. He said “I love Edinburgh and this show was better than I expected.”
And Australia star Michael Falzon, who plays Galileo, said the location had been one of the reasons for his accepting the role. He is looking forward to sightseeing today. He said “ I have always wanted to come here, and I am looking forward to seeing the City.”
