It was THE most wonderful night last night, from beginning to end. The atmosphere at The Dominion was electric, better than I have ever felt it at that show, and that's saying something! So many fabulous fans dressed up - the red carpet was rolled out and the foyer was awash with lycra, wigs, face paint, silly hats, princesses, Queens, clowns, loud shirts and so much else, it was fantastic!
The auditorium was buzzing from the very begginning, and as the date line rolled up on the curtain, it came to September 5th 2006... and it said that Freddie Mercury (although they DID spell his name wrong!) would have been 60. The audience went wild and from that point on, it had to be one of THE best audiences the show has ever had. The cast were in the spirit of the night, and a few word fluffs and script changes were accepted with great good humour by them all and the crowd!
At the point when Killer Queen thinks Kashoggi has captured the Bohemians, and she begins to sing Don't Stop Me Now... (which I have ALWAYS wanted to hear all the way through in the show).... the stage trap door opened and up came...McFLY! The audience was on it's feet in an instant and McFly belted out the whole of Don't Stop Me Now, it was quite brilliant!
The show continued and was, as always, exceptional - I think almost everyone in the audience had a tear in their eye when No One But You was sung - I think even Meat herself was a little overcome.
By the end of the show, everyone was roaring for more and... we most certainly got it as Brian appeared in a cloud of dry ice from below the stage, belting out the Bo Rhap solo! But better yet.... the whole stage set of the Tottenham Court Road tube station, the Bohemians Heartbreak Hotel, rose up.... and there was Roger on a full Queen drum kit! It was spine tingling (and I am still getting shivers down my spine as I write this next day!). Amazing!
Enough I hear you cry? Never - Brian came on alone, with stool and acoustic guitar, and sang Love Of My Life... well actually he sang some of it, and simply played along with the audience as the whole place sang every word with emotion and more than a few tears!
Roger joined him on stage, and sang his beautiful, moving Say It's Not True - oh more tears! The waterproof mascara was definitely a bonus last night!
And finally, the band and cast did The Show Must Go On... it was just a powerful, wonderful finale - and yes, more tears!
Ben Elton came on stage afterwards and said a few thank yous and Happy Birthday to Freddie. Then it really WAS over. I don't think I was the only one who did not want it to end! as we were leaving the auditorium many of the fans were singing Happy Birthday to Freddie... a lovely ending to a brilliant night.
I am sure there was much else going on I have forgotten... oh, at one point in the show they were showing photos of Freddie on the huge screens behind the cast.. that was wonderful too.
In all - we cheered, we shouted, we sang, we laughed and we cried... and it was a magical, magical night.
Many many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to put it together - including of course the wonderful cast of WWRY. I for one shall remember it for a very long time!
