Percentage of sales from Queen – the Unseen Archive to be donated to Victorian AIDS Council
On the eve of the official launch of Queen – the Unseen Archive the City of Ballarat and Victorian AIDS Council have announced that a percentage of ticket sales will go to the charity.
Queen - the Unseen Archive exhibition will be staged at the Art Gallery of Ballarat from 20 February to 11 April 2010.
Queen, consisting of Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor, was formed in London in 1970. Queen achieved global success, becoming one of the most popular bands in the world.
Freddie Mercury passed away on 24 November 1991 at his home at Logan Place in London, aged 45. The official cause of death was Bronchopneumonia; AIDS. He didn't announce his AIDS related illness until the day before his death.
Portfolio Councillor for the City of Ballarat Cheryl Bromfield said Council was delighted to announce its support of the Victorian AIDS Council.
“The City of Ballarat is a leader in promoting community wellbeing across the region and welcomes the opportunity to support the work of the Victorian AIDS Council through Queen - the Unseen Archive”.
Victorian AIDS Council Executive Director Mike Kennedy said he was delighted that a significant regional council like Ballarat has chosen to support the critical work of the Victorian AIDS Council.
“The Victorian AIDS Council depends on the support of the community, companies and government to sustain its vital work,” Mr Kennedy said.
The Victorian AIDS Council supports people living with HIV and communities affected by HIV. It empowers individuals and communities to manage their own health, to build supportive environments for individuals to adopt and sustain healthy behaviours and builds the capacity of the broader community, including government and service providers, to respond to the needs of our communities.
QUEEN – the Unseen Archive will feature unseen images of the group taken by close friend and roadie Peter Hince, providing personal insight into one of the world’s greatest rock bands.
As well as the incredible photo collection, the exhibition features rare items of personal and tour memorabilia, including Freddie Mercury’s pink ladies turtleneck made famous in the 1984 ‘I want to break free’ video clip, the legendary Shure 565 SD microphone used at all but one Queen tour, and the unforgettable tiger skin pants worn by drummer Roger Taylor. Plus hand-written lyrics and original posters, passes and tickets.
